About the Role
The Network / Data Center Field Engineer is an onsite-based freelance role where the engineer is required to visit the client site and perform assigned technical tasks as per instructions. The role involves supporting network and data center infrastructure activities, including hardware installation, rack/unrack work, cabling, labeling, break-fix support, console-based operations, and basic troubleshooting in Hamburg, Germany.
The engineer will work on a ticket-based / on-demand model, where support is required when a task or ticket is assigned. This role requires strong hands-on technical ability, attention to detail, and clear communication with remote technical teams to ensure tasks are completed safely, accurately, and within the required timeframe.
Key Responsibilities
Functional
- Install, rack, and unrack systems, switches, and network devices inside cabinets or racks.
- Perform basic network troubleshooting, break-fix activities, and network surveys.
- Install fibre and Ethernet patch cords as required.
- Support fibre power and light metering activities.
- Perform optional fibre OTDR testing and share trace files when required.
Operational / Delivery
- Unrack systems, switches, and cables, place them on pallets, and apply shrink wrap.
- Install new systems, switches, cabling, and labelling.
- Label, relabel, organise, and dress cabling within cabinets.
- Power cycle equipment by turning power on/off as instructed.
- Replace plug-in hardware such as circuit cards, spare parts, or upgrade components.
- Reseat shelf-mounted or slide-in circuit cards.
Governance & Process
- Follow technical instructions carefully while performing onsite activities.
- Provide remote visual observations and verbal reports regarding cabinet environment status, display lights, and terminal outputs.
- Type input commands on cabinet-mounted consoles as instructed.
- Maintain proper handling and safety practices while working with racks, switches, cables, and data centre equipment.
- Ensure accurate updates and reporting for completed field activities.
- Stakeholder Management
- Communicate clearly with remote technical teams during onsite support tasks.
- Provide timely updates on task progress, issues, and completion status.
- Coordinate with supervisors, internal IT teams, and remote engineers during troubleshooting or installation activities.
- Escalate complex technical issues when required.
Core Deliverables
- Successful installation, racking, unracking, and cabling of network/data center equipment.
- Proper labeling, cable organization, and hardware handling.
- Timely completion of onsite support and break-fix activities.
- Accurate remote reporting of cabinet status, display lights, and terminal outputs.
- Reliable support for network and data center infrastructure operations.
- Required Skills & Competencies
- Basic networking knowledge including IP addressing, VLANs, switching, and troubleshooting.
- Hands-on understanding of fiber and copper/Ethernet cabling.
- Comfortable using RJ45 and USB-Serial console access.
- Basic command-line interface navigation and ability to capture logs.
- Ability to work safely with racks, switches, cables, and data center equipment.
- Good attention to detail for labeling, cabling, and hardware handling.
- Strong communication skills for working with remote technical teams.
Preferred Experience
- Previous experience in data center, field engineering, network support, or IT infrastructure support.
- Hands-on experience with rack/unrack activities, cabling, patching, and hardware replacement.
- Exposure to enterprise network environments, switches, routers, cabinets, and patch panels.
- CCNA or equivalent networking knowledge is preferred.
- Experience with fiber power metering or OTDR testing is an advantage.

- Timely and accurate completion of assigned onsite tasks.
- Quality of cabling, labeling, and hardware installation.
- Accuracy of reporting and remote visual updates.
- Safe handling of data center and network equipment.
- Successful support of break-fix, installation, and troubleshooting activities.
